Why I Created Garden Learners
During my time tutoring RHS Level 2 students, I encountered the same problem repeatedly: learners were overwhelmed by the amount of material and unsure of where to focus their revision. Many spent hours revising, but still lacked confidence when it came to the exam.
That’s why I created Garden Learners, to give students a clearer path. With my background in Plant Biology and training in education, I designed an approach that helps you:
They needed an approach that was:

✅ Save time by focusing on what examiners want you to know
✅ Build confidence with personalised feedback and support
✅ Feel prepared for the exam with affordable, one-to-one tutoring sessions

About Me – Your Tutor and Guide
My passion for gardening began in childhood, and I further developed it by studying at Merrist Wood Horticultural College, where I earned a BTEC Diploma in Nursery Practice.
I also trained in Germany at Woerlein Baumschulen, gaining first-hand insights into European tree production.
For you, this means I bring not only decades of hands-on horticultural knowledge and experience, but also clear, exam-ready lessons that make even tricky topics easier to understand.

35+ Years of Professional Horticultural Experience in Growing and Selling
Hillier Nurseries
(Tree Production Supervisor)
At Hillier Nurseries, one of the UK’s leading growers, I worked across every stage of large-scale tree production, from soil preparation to pruning and order fulfilment.
For you, this means I can simplify complex plant science and production processes into clear, exam-ready explanations, backed by real-world examples that stick.
West Kingston Nurseries
(Maintenance Manager)
As Maintenance Manager at West Kingston Nurseries, I was responsible for irrigation systems, pest and disease management, and large-scale plant production.
This experience allows me to connect the theory to real horticultural practice, so you don’t just memorise facts, you understand how plants are grown, managed, and kept healthy in professional settings.
Whitehall Garden Centre
(Senior Sales Advisor
– Plant Department)
In the plant department of one of the southwest’s busiest garden centres, I diagnosed pests and diseases and advised customers on plant care, covering everything from trees and shrubs to climbers and perennials.
This taught me how to explain plant health and growing techniques clearly and simply, the same clarity I bring to tutoring, so you can master even tricky topics with confidence.
Plant Biology Degree and
Level 3 Education and Training Qualifications
I hold a First-Class Honours Degree in Plant Biology from Aberystwyth University, which means I bring deep scientific knowledge to every session, so when you’re revising tricky topics like photosynthesis, plant nutrition, or adaptations, I can explain them with accuracy and clarity.
In 2025, I also completed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training. This qualification ensures that I not only know horticulture, but also how to teach it effectively, adapting lessons to your learning style and helping you retain information for exams.
A Personalised Approach to Learning
Every learner is different. That’s why I tailor sessions to your learning style (visual, verbal, or interactive) and link theory to real-world horticulture.
My goal is straightforward: to help you build your confidence so you feel prepared for the exam.
You’re in safe, experienced hands.
Garden Learners has one purpose: to help you pass your RHS Level 2 with confidence. With tailored tutoring, focused revision notes, and 35+ years of horticultural experience, you’ll save time, reduce stress, and walk into your exam prepared for success.
